The Pigeon River Fund recently awarded $217,010 to environmental groups working to improve surface water quality in Buncombe, Haywood and Madison counties.  Asheville GreenWorks was awarded $22,200 to install a Trash Trout, a GreenWorks-designed device that removes floating debris, on Hominy Creek.  The Trash Trout can hold hundreds of pounds of trash; volunteers empty the device after every heavy rainfall when water carries surface trash into creeks and rivers.  Photo courtesy of Asheville GreenWorks.    Since 1996, the Pigeon River Fund has distributed nearly $7 million in grants.  Learn more.

Maria Hinojosa is the featured speaker for The Community Foundation’s 14th Annual Power of the Purse®. Her talk, “My American Experience: Immigration, Disparity and Opportunity,” will address the critical issues of migration, immigration and changing demographics. Hinojosa has worked for CNN, PBS, CBS, WNBC and WGBH. Her work has received numerous awards including: four Emmys; the 2012 John Chancellor Award for Excellence in Journalism; Robert F. Kennedy Award for Reporting on the Disadvantaged; the Studs Terkel Community Media Award; and the Edward R. Murrow Award from the Overseas Press Club.  Power of the Purse® benefits The Women's Fund endowment.
