The Fund for Haywood County Announces $70,008 in Grants

(April 2019) – Thirteen grants totaling $70,008 were recently awarded to Haywood County nonprofits from The Fund for Haywood County, the J. Aaron and Adora H. Prevost Endowment Fund and the Mib and Phil Medford Endowment Fund. The grants include: 

The Arc of Haywood County Inc. was awarded $2,500 to fund a creative arts program serving 40 individuals who have intellectual and developmental disabilities.  

Clothes To Kids of Haywood County was awarded $2,000 for a rental trailer to allow more room to sort and store donated clothing items.  

The Community Kitchen was awarded $5,600 for food and supplies needed on a daily basis to provide fresh, hot meals nightly.

Fines Creek Community Association was awarded $4,680 to fund Phase II of its Community Kitchen rehabilitation project.

Haywood County Meals on Wheels was awarded $5,200 to provide twenty shelf-stable meals per recipient for a year for use during holidays, inclement weather, and when meal delivery is unavailable.

Haywood Pathways Center, Inc. was awarded $5,600 for salary support of its Case Manager, who will transition to a Family Case Manager in a new dormitory for women and children to open in early 2019.

HIGHTS Inc. was awarded $3,048 to purchase new beehives and equipment as part of its "Bee Well" education program for at-risk youth.

KARE (Kids Advocacy Resource Effort) was awarded $5,600 to provide trauma-informed training to employees and community partners regarding crimes against children.

NC International Folk Festival/Folkmoot was awarded $5,600 to support staffing for school-based cultural programming and summer diversity and cultural leadership training.

No Boundaries: Integrated Services for Independent Living, Inc. was awarded $5,200 to operate its medical equipment loan closet.

North Carolina Arboretum Society was awarded $3,700 to expand the Arboretum's Project EXPLORE outdoor education programs for schools, teachers and students in Haywood County.

STAR Ranch was awarded $7,000 to purchase a used tractor to maintain the property.

Town of Waynesville was awarded $14,280 from the Mib and Phil Medford Endowment Fund to improve and beautify the Miller Street Park in Downtown Waynesville. The Medford Fund supports beautification, streetscape improvements and other public amenities in Waynesville. 

“Through the support of friends and neighbors, we are able to fund a wide variety of nonprofits and projects and can continue to meet changing needs over time,” said Advisory Board Chair Christine Mallette. “We are very grateful to everyone who has helped to build a permanent charitable resource for Haywood County. We welcome additional gifts to the Fund that will enable us to support even more local programs with local dollars.”

With goals to inspire philanthropy and to strengthen charitable organizations in Haywood County, The Fund for Haywood County is an affiliate of The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina (CFWNC) established in 1994 by a group of local residents. The Fund grows through tax-deductible contributions. Gifts are added to the principal, which is preserved and invested. The returns are used to make grants to support nonprofits in Haywood County. Since 1994, The Fund for Haywood County, in partnership with CFWNC, has awarded grants totaling $1,104,019.
