It was their deep love for Rutherford County that inspired the Wilkins to establish a charitable remainder trust to benefit the Rutherford County Foundation, an affiliate of The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina. Dick and Martha moved to Rutherford County in 1965 when Dick began a career with Tanner Companies. Dick, who is now retired, says, “I don’t miss the work nearly as much as I miss the people.”
It was in Rutherford County that the Wilkins raised their four children who now, as adults, remember with fondness growing up in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Wilkins’ children enthusiastically supported the establishment of the trust.
By establishing a charitable remainder trust, the Wilkins receive income throughout their lifetimes and, at their death, the remainder will provide a lasting resource for their community. “We are not unique. There are many others who love Rutherford County. Our hope is that as they learn of the Foundation, they too, will want to become a part of it. Over time, our efforts will grow large enough to meet many of our county’s needs. The Rutherford County Foundation is a doorway through which we can return thanks for the blessings of Rutherford County.”
