Haiti Needs our Help

Aid organizations need your assistance to help victims of the tragic earthquake in Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere. Donating cash to qualified organizations is the best way to support relief efforts because it allows professionals to get exactly what they need and does not tie up scarce resources such as transportation, staff time or warehouse space. Here is a list of some agencies working in Haiti who are accepting donations:

AmeriCares has pledged $5 million worth of aid for the people of Haiti. To support their efforts with a tax-deductible contribution, click here.

The American Red Cross is sending money, supplies and staff to Haiti. The White House encourages donations through the Red Cross International Response Fund. You can make a donation by calling 1-800-REDCROSS or by visiting www.redcross.org or use your cell phone to make an immediate $10 donation to the American Red Cross by texting ‘Haiti’ to 90999.

World Vision has worked in Haiti for 30 years and has some 370 staff in country. The organization encourages donations to the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund. Click here for more information.

Doctors without Borders were already working on medical projects Haiti and have treated hundreds of people injured in the quake. To support their teams working to provide medical care following the quake, click here and use the Donate Now button.

In early 2009, The Community Foundation committed to raise $1 million to help those most hurt by the downturn in the economy. Seeding the fund with $250,000 and working with donors and partners such as the Cherokee Preservation Foundation and nine regional affiliates, the total raised has grown to $1 million.

Every penny of that $1 million is being distributed in 2009 to organizations providing food, shelter, medical care and creating new jobs. The Recession Response Fund has been deployed quickly and efficiently to organizations doing important work across the region.
