Madelyn Lea Memorial Scholarship

Madelyn Lea was a resident of Hayesville and the long-time music director at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and Ledford’s Chapel United Methodist Church. After her death in 2006, Madelyn Lea’s friends established this scholarship fund in her memory. The fund provides an award to a graduating senior from Clay County, North Carolina.

Eligibility

The Madelyn Lea Memorial Scholarship Fund provides scholarship awards to graduating seniors whose primary residence is in Clay County, and who attend Hayesville High School, the NC School of Science and Mathematics, the UNC School of the Arts High School, Tri-County Early College High School, or a home school registered with the NC Department of Non-Public Education. Recipients must plan to attend an accredited U.S. college, university, community college, or vocational school full-time.

The Community Foundation scholarships will be awarded without regard to age, race, national origin, ethnicity, gender, disability, sexual orientation, political affiliation, religious belief, or any other characteristic protected by law.

Selection Criteria

  • academic merit (measured by class rank, GPA, SAT scores);
  • good character;
  • leadership skills;participation in community service.

Preference will be given to students with:

  • an interest in music, through participation and accomplishment as an individual or through school or community involvement;
  • demonstrated financial need

Application Procedure

To apply, students must complete an application online.  The application, with required attachments, must be submitted online on or before the deadline.
