Nonprofit Funds

What is a Nonprofit Fund?

A nonprofit fund is an endowed fund created by a nonprofit organization. More than 130 nonprofits in Western North Carolina have chosen to secure all or part of their endowment with The Community Foundation. An initial gift of $25,000 can establish a nonprofit fund that provides annual support to a nonprofit and allows the principal to grow in perpetuity.

Placing endowment funds at The Community Foundation ensures the long-term stewardship and objective fiscal management of a nonprofit’s funds. It also frees nonprofit staff from the burdens of endowment management and reporting, so they can focus on fulfilling their mission.

Endowment services include:

  • Reinvestment or distribution of fund earnings
  • Tax reporting and documentation
  • Annual audit of all funds
  • Quarterly fund statements and online access to fund information
  • Workshops on endowment asset development
  • Planned giving assistance and technical resources

Blue Ridge Assembly Building

The Blue Ridge Assembly has maintained two funds at CFWNC for more than a decade. Roger Hibbard, former Blue Ridge Assembly CEO, explained that prior to transferring assets to the Foundation, the board managed the funds themselves. “When we invested with The Community Foundation, we institutionalized our assets and placed them in the hands of experts,” said Hibbard. “By bundling our money with theirs we gained access to layers of supervision, diversity of investments, benchmarks and standards that a portfolio of our size could never command on its own. Simply put, the Foundation enables us to operate in a much better investment environment.”

Another benefit of maintaining funds with the Foundation, according to Hibbard, is that donors have access to sophisticated giving tools such as charitable remainder trusts and charitable gift annuities, that the Assembly could not offer and that put the needs and desires of donors first.
